During a discussion of Judaism's view of the afterlife:
Carl: "Have you ever thought about the etymology of the word Sheol?"
Me: "No. But then, I can't say it's ever come up in conversation before."
Carl: "Really?!"
He was honestly shocked. Jonathan nearly snorted tea out his nose laughing.

LOL, I'm with my grandmother on this one!
In Sheryl's defense, I don't think Sheryl's asking for the definition of the word...I suspect she knows what etyology means. I believe she wants to know the actual answer to the question! I'm kinda curious myself.

In Savta's defense, click on the word "Sheol." The wikipedia entry has a whole section on its etymology.
Ok, you win! LOL

Yes - I can click on a link - I hate to be preachy, but Wikipedia is not always an authoritative source. What I hadn't gotten around to doing, was checking something like the Theological Dictionary of Old Testament.

Now THAT'S the Sheryl I know and love! ;-D
I surrender!

hmm.... too lazy too look at the wiki article, but my closest guess would be the shoresh shin/aleph/lamed = question???
Yep, that's what we thought, and what the article says.
And what's with you all people who won't click on links?! I'll stop posting them!
