Even though home is nowhere near the burn area, my mom said she could smell the fires from our house. I know too many people who live in San Diego, Poway, Rancho.... good luck.

It's absolutely terrible. In San Diego, over 300,000 people have been evacuated and in Malibu, the fire is still roaring out of control.
This morning both our cars were covered with ash and the smell of smoke still hung in the air.
FEMA supposedly is doing a fantastic job in San Diego. Where were they in Louisiana where so many poor blacks live?
I completely agree - on all counts. It's amazing how quick the government is to declare a national emergency when the homes at risk are rich white people's.
Things seem to be much better today. Still lots of fires but many are well on the way of being controlled. This morning it was reported that malibu was 80% under control.
The smell of smoke is virtually gone in our area and very little ash floating our way. Unfortunately, the temperature is still way above normal for this time of the year. It's been in the '90s.
My friend, Michelle, (your favorite lap, Michal) who lives in Arrowhead was evacuated and found out yesterday that her home was spared...one of only 4 on her block. her Dad's home is gone. We're getting together tomorrow night for dinner.
Bev and I are well. Thanks so much for all your calls.
There was an article in the LA Times yesterday explaining how that no-matter where in the greater LA area there is a fire, the smoke and ash blow to Long Beach.
In regard to Jan's comment (its so funny having a blog discussion when she is at the next desk over) I would like to think that the better response is because the gov learned some lessons at Katrina. I guess we'll find out when there is another disaster in a poor area.
