Recreations Outlet

This Saturday we went to Liam's second birthday party at Recreations Outlet, an indoor heaven for kids. We've brought Xander there before but this weekend he was old enough to really get into it. Basically it's a showroom for the people who make the huge jungle gyms. Suffice it to say the party was a huge success!

Just one tiny section of the place.

Jumping up and down.

Our little engineer, trying to figure out how it works.

The joy of swings.

What fun!

One get kisses everywhere!

Motorcycle riding.

He climbed up there himself.

And last but not least, the anatomy of a bounce. First we walk in with Liam, then check with Mommy that all is okay, then.... BOUNCE!

I am Wonder Woman

I tell Xander "I'm going to count to three, and by the time I get to three you need to put that down." And he looks stricken and PUTS IT DOWN BY ONE. Almost every time.

It's the biggest power rush I get all day. :)

Things things and more things

I returned three cloth grocery bags full of books to the library this morning. Now that I've done all the research for the thesis proposal, I realized that I'm not actually going to write the thing until summer. I can't justify keeping all the books til then.. but I do feel sorry for the person putting them back in the stacks.

Yesterday Jonathan washed Osher and he was NOT a happy cat. Xander was very concerned for him, saying, "be happy Osher!" When that failed to work, 5 minutes later Xander came back and sternly rebuked him: "stop saying meow!" Jonathan and I fell on the floor.

Classes are going great! But it feels very strange to only be on campus two days a week instead of four or five. It's so nice to work at home when I can... there's nothing like laying on the couch doing reading instead of sitting in an upright chair. I will admit though that I sure get a lot more done in the library.

(Simcha, on the other hand, loves me working at home. Even when I have my laptop on my lap he manages to maximize his comfiness.)

Speaking of laptops, my new-to-me computer is great in every way except for Skyping. It's a little slower than my old Dell, and I can tell the difference in terms of volume control and how often the video skips and stops. But I can't complain... living without that inch-long white stripe in the middle of the screen is truly, truly bliss.

What else? Two days ago when Jonathan and I both wanted dessert we went out for a spontaneous Kroger trip to buy pie. The pie is now gone. It's very sad. I want more pie. :(

That's really about it. Now to get to class...

Feeling less stressed

1) Turns out Xander had an ear infection last week, which explained the crankiness. Now he's on meds and is so much better, back to his usual self. I hadn't realized how much his attitude was stressing me out.

2) Support groups! Today was the toddler Tu Bishvat party at the JCC, and it was great to be among other parents. I saw all the usual toddler/parent friends, and then Ginger and her two girls and I went out to lunch. Xander couldn't care less about all the people, he was in love with the Bounce House.

3) Naps. Jonathan watched Xander yesterday while I slept for three hours in the middle of the day. It's amazing how sleep can revitalize me.

4) Reading for fun! I just finished Phillipa Gregory's The White Queen, which, to be honest, I didn't enjoy very much. I know she's gotten rave reviews for her historical novels, but I found this one at least to be too political, with not enough character development. Not to mention she killed off (or history killed off) all the characters I liked, and left me with the manipulative annoying ones. I also read The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook though and LOVED it. It's geared for kids, meaning it was fun reading and I can actually make the recipes. I put post-it notes on all the recipes I want us to make, some with Xander, some without. Unsurprisingly, they're mostly desserts. :)

5) And I'm trying very hard to think of a #5, but I can't. Make one up and email me!

Random tidbits

Xander has started to say, "I love you," spontaneously! He says it to us while he gives us hugs, at bedtime, etc. It's really sweet. Of course, he also made an orange carrot out of Play-Doh, held it up to his cheek to hug it, and said, "I love you carrot," so maybe we should be taking the phrase with a grain of salt.

And something that I thought was really funny, that typifies this pregnancy: last night we were watching The Big Bang Theory on Netflix and I was mesmerized by the screen. A character was eating a Twizzler and all I could think of was, I want a Twizzler! Then the scene ended and I realized I had completely missed the dialogue, I was so focused on the candy! I asked Jonathan to rewind and play it again, and he bust up laughing when I told him why. :)

Feeling old

Or at least, like an adult.

The good adult part today was very strange... I had a meeting with the director of Xander's preschool to talk about the biting problem in his classroom. It's prevalent. And some kid bit Xander last week, so a few days later he bit someone else. Jonathan and I were not happy, it was completely learned behavior. Upshot of the story is, the director and the teachers are wholly aware of the issue and shared ways that they're trying to change the classroom dynamics. It was still odd though to be the one instigating a parent-teacher conference.

The bad part of being an adult is that I'm tired of being responsible. I'm tired of taking 10 pills a day, of various supplements to help with the pregnancy. They're all horse pills. I'm tired of using a Neti pot three times a day to get rid of my cold, because I can't take meds. It works, but I still don't like the feeling. And I'm tired of pricking my finger 4 times a day to test my blood sugar. I understand the midwife's reasoning, that doing this for a series of days gives a more accurate reading for how your body actually reacts to sugar than doing the standard "drink a gallon of glucose water" test, but it's still annoying. And the pinprick hurts.

And worst of all... classes start tomorrow. Two of my AJA clients asked me for more work, and they're regular clients so I can't put them off too much. And my thesis proposal is due next week. Aagh! I think being almost eight months along is starting to effect my mood at this point. Too much to do, too little time!

Things that make me happy

1) Four of my interlibrary loan books came today! They're ones I was really waiting for. I went to pick them up today because the school will be closed Monday, and I want to work on my proposal more over the weekend. I had to stop myself from doing a happy dance when I got to the circulation desk. Noni the librarian laughed at me anyway. :)

2) Remember when Jonathan went to Seattle to visit Ania? She gifted him with a new-to-us laptop that didn't work. Well, Jonathan spent the last week fixing it, and now it's perfect!! I spent last night downloading Skype and Bibleworks and such onto it, and backing up all my files from my current laptop (which is six years old and has a large white stripe down the screen). So tomorrow I'll move everything over, and then I'll have a perfectly new laptop, 1/4 the weight, with no stripe!

3) I cooked dinner tonight. Well, I made mac and cheese. With peas. Does that count? I would say yes, but Jonathan's already rolling his eyes. And I have this vague memory of Sarah, the daughter of one of my mom's closest friends, cooking her family Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 12. Oh well. A year ago, all I could do is microwave. Now I can make eggs, pasta, and rice. It's a good start, no?

4) Xander's logic. The baby was moving around a lot, so I put his hand on my belly. "Can you feel the baby kicking?" I asked. His eyes lit up as he nodded yes. "Me kick Mommy too!"

5) The Princess Bride in 30 seconds, with bunnies. Hilarious.

Excellent research day

For those who don't know, I first applied to the HUC graduate program before the admissions officer suggested I take a look at the rabbinic program. Obviously I chose the rabbinical path... but yesterday I got back to my roots.

On Friday, I found this great Hebrew resource book listing all rabbinic material based off of Biblical verses. I.e. I looked up "Exodus 22:17" and there were two huge paragraphs full of abbreviations. I knew the Talmudic abbreviations, but that only got me past the first two lines. So Sunday night, I emailed the fabulous rare book librarian, asking to make an appointment for help the next morning. I thought it would take him ten minutes to decipher, but instead, we pored over that book for over an hour. In the end, we had to find another little-used book that detailed all abbreviations. Who knew, for example, that the letters "mem-tav pay-gimel" stood for Megillat Taanit, part 3? I'd never even heard of Megillat Taanit before, no wonder I didn't recognize the reference! By the time we were done, I had over 17 new sources to go through, most of them only in Hebrew and completely unfamiliar to me before we started.

Second, and even more exciting for me, my thesis advisor had given me a book recommendation that was supposedly an index to Biblical verse references in Philo. I say "supposedly," because it was hard to even find the book at first, since I hadn't realized it in French. Once I finally tracked it down in the stacks, I couldn't read it. Loathe to ask for more help, I skimmed the series and found an actual list of verses (still in French) in the very back "additif" section. I managed to find the verse I was looking for, but then still couldn't figure out the abbreviation next to it, "D SPEC." Thankfully, this time Google could help. I plugged in "Philo de Spec" (which I figured was a good start) and lo and behold, Philo wrote something called De Specialibus Legibus, known in English as The Special Laws. The Jewish Encyclopedia told me that The Special Laws were the last part of a book entitled, On the Law, and what do you know, On the Law was listed in the library catalog! It took me twenty-five minutes to go from the French book to the actual English Philo text, but I have to say, I was very proud of myself when I finally found it. :)

I came home and explained all this to Jonathan, who glazed over a little and shook his head like "thank god it's you not me." I returned the favor later that night though, when I did the same exact same thing: he was explaining to me in detail the steps he was taking in order to fix the problem he was having with building a RAID on his server. I guess we're all geeks in our different ways!

The Seinfeld post

Because really, it's about... nothing.

Like, I have nothing to say.

Xander is speaking more in sentences now, saying "come with me" instead of just "come me." He's also learning pronouns, so if I say, "where's Daddy?" he'll say, "go find him."

I went to my pulpit this weekend. It was snowy, so Jonathan drove me. Xander was sick. It wasn't fun. Though I did experiment and did a mostly English-language service (instead of the usual half-English half-Hebrew). People either loved it or hated it. No one was neutral. I was amused.

Jonathan's been deep at work fixing his computer in the evenings, so I've been left to my own devices and finished The Tudors on Netflix. Great show. And they aged the characters beautifully.

Debbie Friedman passed away today. She completely revitalized Jewish prayer and liturgy a couple decades ago, bringing folk music into services. I never knew her personally, but I loved her music. Her influence is such that you can tell who of my friends are Jewish and who's not based purely on my Facebook feed; all the Jews have something about her on their statuses, and the others go on normally.

Other than that... Jonathan is upstairs dealing with Xander who's currently refusing to go to sleep. I'm down here thanking my lucky stars that he has the patience to be with him, because I don't.

And... that's about it. Lilah tov, good night all!

Constant changes

- I'm in my third trimester and feeling it. Getting up from chairs is more difficult than one would think.

- Xander started at a new daycare on Monday and loves it so far. When Jonathan and I picked him up today he said, "No go home! Play here!" and then he ran away.

- I solidified a thesis topic and am hard at work researching. My topic in sum: Exodus 22:17 says, "Thou shall not tolerate a sorceress," and the rabbinic literature is full of stories of "evil" women magicians. But Juvenal (historical source from 1st and 2nd century) writes that Jewish women were magicians in a positive way. So I'm gonna trace the chronology of Jewish sorceresses from Biblical through rabbinic times, examining the rabbinic sources in light of the broader Greco-Roman background. I'll start with the Biblical Exodus verse and the Witch of Endor in Samuel, then go to the Testament of Job, the Book of Enoch, Joseph Asaneth, Philo, Juvenal, and end with all the references in Talmud/Tosefta/other rabbinic books. It should be fun.

- Only one more week before school starts. And in that week I have a pulpit visit, more thesis proposal research to do, a project for the Dean's Office, and lots and lots of laundry. Amazing how fast vacations turn into working vacations. Good thing I like what I do!

Nursing on Capitol Hill

For Capitol’s Nursing Mothers, an Escape From Politics

Subtitled: "Lactation rooms are capital's neutral zone."

It doesn't surprise me - motherhood, if nothing else, is bipartisan!
